Clawstar might have a name suggesting a large, heavily battle-scarred tom with shredded ears and a tattered nose. Actually, Clawstar is quite intact, and also a very small cat. Clean and quick, Clawstar uses strategy, not strength, and speed, not power, to his advantage. He is coated with short grey fur; he is a bit skinny, as most ShadowClan cats are, but he is very healthy. His green eyes are dark, but at the same time misty and even pale. His eyes do not impact his appearance much, as his fur colour and eye colour look very similar in shades of colour. Clawstar might be fast, but his legs are not long; he says to let WindClan cats have those types of legs. Green eyes that might seem rather dull can also seem to penetrate your mind. His fur is slick, and therefore slightly suited to being in the marshes and rivers. He is a better ShadowClan cat than anything else, quite plainly. Overall, the ShadowClan leader is a small, slick cat whose name misleads and whose fur and eyes do not stand out.

Clawstar is, to put it plainly, serious. As Jaykit, he was focused and concentrated on becoming an apprentice. As Jaypaw, he was focused and concentrated on becoming a warrior. As Jayfire, he was focused and concentrated on becoming a mentor. As Clawfox, he was focused and concentrated on becoming the deputy. As Clawstar, he was focused and concentrated on everything that he hadn't been focused and concentrated on before. Serious, calm, and thoughtful, Clawstar is a wise cat if there ever was one. He is wary of foxes, as they killed Rowanwing, Cedarflame, Quailclaw, and Wetstar, and even more wary of other cats, as they can understand you and guess your plans. Clawstar dislikes kittypets, rogues, and loners, and dislikes half-Clan cats as well. Given the right situation, Clawstar might welcome a half-Clan into ShadowClan, but kittypets, rogues, and loners will only be found in ShadowClan because Ashstar or Wetstar let them into the Clan. Overall, Clawstar is very serious.

Jaykit and Firekit were born to Darkclaw and Birdclaw, two loving parents. Darkclaw was a grey she-cat, Birdclaw was a small flame-coloured ginger tomcat, Firekit was a flame-coloured ginger tomkit, and Jaykit was a small grey tomkit. Darkclaw and Birdclaw had green eyes, and so did Jaykit. Firekit had blue eyes. Jaykit was an ever-serious cat. All he did was concentrate and focus. If he played with a butterfly, he did it seriously. For his whole kithood, Jaykit was planted on being the best cat ever to carry the name of Jaypaw; but not in an excited way. He was aiming to do everything well; so well that the leader would deem him worthy of being an apprentice, and then a warrior, and then perhaps even a mentor, and then possibly even the deputy. Firekit just wanted to become Firepaw, and often pestered Darkclaw about it. Jaykit, however, dreamed of becoming Jaystar; and a very good, loyal Jaystar at that. Jaykit spent his whole life thinking of victory; and it paid off in the very end.

Ashstar, the leader, proclaimed Jaykit as Jaypaw and Firekit as Firepaw and apprenticed them to Blacksun and Quailclaw. Jaypaw was an extraordinary hunter but an average fighter; so was Firepaw. Blacksun kept on training Firepaw, but did not push to make his fighting skills better. Quailclaw, however, did for Jaypaw; but Jaypaw would've told him to if he hadn't, so he would probably have done it anyway. Quailclaw's good training of Jaypaw helped him survive in what was to come ShadowClan's way. ThunderClan came streaming across the Thunderpath. Claws raked angrily and cats screeched. Jaypaw and Firepaw were caught in the middle of a battle. ShadowClan came out the victor, but at a great loss: Birdclaw, Blacksun, and Firepaw were dead. Jaypaw mourned his father, brother, and brother's mentor for many days and nights. Finally, Darkclaw, Quailclaw, and Ashstar talked him into training again. Jaypaw regained his skills; and his serious attitude, which Firepaw's death brought back.

Jaypaw became a warrior known as Jayfire. He didn't even need to request the name; Ashstar had known that he wanted to carry his brother's name as well as his. Serious, hard work and rough, endless toil for the Clan brought him another benefit: an apprentice, by name of Rowanpaw. Cedarpaw, Rowanpaw's sister, was apprenticed to Quailclaw. Jayfire trained again with Quailclaw and two other cats; but this time as a mentor. Determined to make his apprentice more prepared than Firepaw had been, Jayfire trained Rowanpaw every day that he could. If he couldn't, he would ask other cats to do so. Rowanpaw and Cedarpaw became great apprentices for the Clan to have. Soon their warrior ceremony came, and Rowanwing and Cedarflame had come to join the warrior ranks of ShadowClan. But tragedy struck them as well; a few foxes attacked, leaving Rowanwing, Cedarflame, and Quailclaw dead and Jayfire scarred before fleeing. Jayfire was renamed Clawfox in honour of his role in the foxes' attack.

Soon, the deputy, Redfire, was killed by a badger, and so was Darkclaw while trying to avenge his death. Wetfish became the ShadowClan deputy. Wetfish was a good senior warrior and a good deputy, and when Ashstar lost his final life in a border raid, Wetfish became a good leader as well. Clawfox became Wetstar's deputy, much to his surprise; but he was still eager to become the best cat that he could become. Wetstar reigned for many more moons, but a fox attacked ShadowClan. The fox lost his life, but so did Wetstar, and it was his last life. Clawfox, the cat who had started out as a focused Jaykit, the cat who had become a concentrated Jaypaw, and the cat who had become a devoted Jayfire, became the leader of ShadowClan. He travelled with the medicine cat to Highstones, where he received the nine lives of a leader and his new name, Clawstar. Clawstar has been the leader of ShadowClan for six moons; he is quite wary of foxes and even more of other cats, as he is a careful cat.
